Continental mail-boats depart from Admiralty Pier onto which the boat trains run. With Calais a mere 21 miles away, Dover is the closest town on the British mainland to continental Europe. In 1860 and 1864 the South Eastern Railway and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway ran trains along the pier to connect with the railway owned steamers.
