A Fenman's Cottage

“A Fenman’s Cottage. – Here we have a harmony of reeds and weeds forming a very rustic picture, a true Norfolk cottage, rugged and weather-beaten. Could we see the fenman who in habits this inflammable looking cot, we should find him equally rugged and weather-beaten. He would probably be a bronzed, wrinkled man, grey-eyed and tangle-bearded, the latter varying in colour from a brown to a tawny-tow tinted shade. A straight nose, shaggy eyebrows, and wide mouth would complete this honest fenman’s face. I know them and their simple ways, and hope their contact with town-folk will not spoil them and teach them too much.”
