This 13th-15th century stronghold came into the hands of the Anglo-Norman Butlers in the 18th century. "It was besieged during the reign of Elizabeth by the Earl of Essex; again in 1647 by Lord Inchiquin; and in 1650 by Oliver Cromwell himself."

Text from William Hemphill's 'Stereoscopic Illustrations of Clonmel'.
