Charterhouse, Exterior Of Washhouse Court
Photographer: Dixon, Henry (1820 - 1892)
Medium: Photographic print
Washhouse Courtyard was used to house those who looked after the monks, to serve food to the poor and to accommodate the Brothers.
"Archdeacon Hale says: 'If not coeval (of the same age) with the building of the monastery as shown' (in the plan annexed to his paper), 'it must have been a very early addition to it. Three sides of it still remain; the windows and doorways give evidence of great variety of structure and of date, and the joints of the brickwork proofs of many alterations.'"
