Chimneypiece, Great Hall, Charterhouse

Photographer: Dixon, Henry (1820 - 1892)
Medium: Photographic print
Date: 1880

"The chimneypiece is of Sutton's time; the cannon and powder barrels convey an allusion to his office of Master of the Ordnance...Thomas Sutton purchased the estate, in 1611, for £13,000. Sutton was a man of great ability and very varied experience; sometime student of Lincoln's Inn, afterwards a traveller through many countries of Europe, a Secretary to a great Lord,...but now a wealthy London merchant whose purse was reputed to be fuller than the Queen's exchequer."
Letterpress by Alfred Mark from 'Photographs of Old London'.
