"We reproduce a portrait of Dr. W. H. Rean, M.R.C.S. Eng., President of the Brighton Photographic Society. The following note has been contributed by a lady member of the Society:- 'Dr. Rean has been elected for the second time President of our Society. He is an enthusiastic amateur, and has practised the art of photography since the year 1870. Residing at that time in one of the most beautiful parts of Devonshire, he had every opportunity of exercising his skill. A few years ago Mr. Rean removed to Brighton, where he was struck by the fact that in so large a town there existed no society where lovers of photography could meet for the interchange of ideas. Together with one or two gentlemen, the Doctor was instrumental in promoting the formation of the Brighton Photographic Society, which is now in a very flourishing condition and doing much good work in photography. Dr. Rean is known not only as a photographer, but as an ardent scientist. He is a member of the council of the Brighton and Sussex Natural History and Philosophical Society, and has read several papers, chiefly upon optical subjects, before that body.'"
