Dover Castle on top of the cliffs above the harbour was built in the Middle Ages on a site that dates back to the prehistoric Iron Age. It occupies a site of strategic importance, unique as it affords the shortest crossing point of the English channel to continental Europe. During the Napoleonic wars the castle, known as the Key to England, was altered to improve its defences.
