“Dyke at Ranworth. – Shewing a ‘reed-rond’ with its harvest of reeds stacked upon it to ‘weather’ and dry in the sun. This kind of reed frequently grows to a height of over nine feet and is of the kind destined for house-thatching, a purpose for which it is admirably adapted, as, besides its well-known durability, it keeps a house delightfully cool in summer and cosily warm in winter.”
Letterpress description by Ernest R. Suffling accompanying Plate XVII from ‘Sun Pictures of the Norfolk Broads’.
