"The three great lancets at Ely, with the five smaller lights above, so ingeniously worked into the form of the vaulting, and surmounted externally, by three other lancets, giving light to the loft above the vault, go far to reconcile us to the absence of an apse, and in our opinion, the whole composition of this eastern end, internally as well as externally, produces an effect far more impressive than that produced by one huge window, however grand in itself."

Text by Precentor of Ely W E Dickson from the book 'The Fen and Marshland Churches'.
