"The work is of Sutton's time. On the wall to the left, not shown in the photograph, are tablets in memory of Leech and Thackeray...Thomas Sutton purchased the estate, in 1611, for £13,000. Sutton was a man of great ability and very varied experience; sometime student of Lincoln's Inn, afterwards a traveller through many countries of Europe, a secretary to a great Lord, Master-General of the Ordnance in the North, but now a wealthy London merchant whose purse was reputed to be fuller than the Queen's exchequer."

Letterpress by Alfred Mark from 'Photographs of Old London'.
