Ferry Nab, Windermere
Photographer: Holt, Harry
Medium: Photographic print
Prize-winning photograph in the 'Seascape or River Scenery' category of the 'Amateur Photographer' Monthly Competition No. 31, January 1892
"'Ferry Nab, Windermere' (Mr. Harry Holt - Second Bronze Medal). In such a district as that in which Mr. Holt secured this photograph, it is difficult to point the lens in any direction without obtaining a picture, and Mr. Holt shows us one of the many charming little creeks which abound on the shores of the Queen of the English Lakes. The composition, however, is not quite perfect, and might have been improved by bringing the man and boat a little more into the picture. The overhanging boughs of the trees, although serving to balance the composition, appear themselves to lack support, their trunks not being included. We have seen other work from this competitor during the year, and we have noted a gradual improvement in its quality. Indeed, in one of our recent lantern-slide competitions, Mr. Holt succeeded in winning the silver medal. The photograph was taken with a Wray rapid rectilinear f/32, and six seconds' exposure was given upon a Wratten's instantaneous plate."
