"The reach above Whitchurch is a very beautiful part of the river. The hills on each side are high and richly wooded, and the grounds of Basilden Park especially are very attractive...Basilden formerly belonged to Viscount Fane, then to Sir Francis Sykes, who built the existing mansion, and was from him purchased by Mr. Morrison. The present owner has made a fine collection of works of art, which will repay inspection. Among them may be mentioned the tinted Venus, by Gibson, which, as a bold experiment in art, excited so much attention when first exhibited."
