Sculpture awaiting installation at the Crystal Palace exhibition hall in Sydenham. Designed by architect Joseph Paxton for the first universal fair held in Hyde Park in 1851, the prefabricated building was then dismantled and reconstructed in south-east London. The building was a milestone in the development of modern architecture for of its innovative use of wrought iron and glass and it housed a showcase for British arts and industries until it was destroyed by fire in 1936.
