"Mr. W. Smedley (Derby) received the first award (Silver Medal with ribbon and clasp) for his splendid portrait study, 'My Sister,' which we reproduce as a frontispiece. We are sure all our subscribers will be charmed with it as a picture and a photograph. A Ross Universal lens, working at f/20, was used, and an exposure of 4 secs. given to a 'Castle' ordinary plate in a dull light. The posing is admirable, and the careful lighting renders the face beautifully soft; the print is on Scholzig's matt surface paper, toned to a warm purple with the tungstate bath."

Text by Charles W Hastings, editor of 'The Photographic Societies' Reporter,' 'Amateur Photographer,' 'Photographic Quarterly,' etc.
