Giuliano de Medici was the brother of Lorenzo de Medici (1449-1492), Italian statesman, head of the ruling Florentine dynasty and possibly the greatest patron of Renaissance art and literature. It was in the Medici court that Michelangelo began his outstanding career as sculptor and artist. In 1478 Giuliano was assassinated by supporters of Pope Sixtus IV as part of an attempt to usurp power from the Medici family.
