The Nelson Monument in Great Yarmouth, "erected to the memory of the hero of Trafalgar, stands upon the south denes, and is a prominent object from the Marine Drive. It was erected in the year 1817, and consists of a handsome fluted pillar of the Doric order, 144 feet high, upon which caryatides support a cupola surmounted by a globe bearing an erect figure of Britannia. On the square of the capital are the names of the ships on board of which the intrepid Nelson gained his laurels."
