These "humble tenements" are "built upon the verge of the red-sandstone rock, which here rises abruptly from the left bank of the Irwell. They are interesting from their picturesque appearance, and the peculiar mode of access to them - a light, open gallery, supported by upright posts, being carried along each flat. The locality is still designated the Parsonage - a name derived from the close or field which once extended from the rear to the old Rectory-house, or Parsonage, in Deansgate."

Text by James Croston.
