"'On the Colne, Rickmansworth' (Mr. E. A. Duff, London). For this picture which secured the Silver Medal, we have nothing but praise. The materials of which it is composed are simple, but the treatment is effective and the result charming. The day is evidently a sultry one, and the cattle are driven by the heat to seek the cool refreshment of the clear pellucid waters of the Colne. Mr. Duff informs us that he used a rapid rectilinear of 8-inch focus working at f/16, and that he gave two seconds' exposure to an Ilford ordinary. Notwithstanding this what to some would appear a long exposure, no trace of movement is apparent in any of the cattle, and it cannot be doubted but that the increased exposure has tended to the success of the result."
