On The Tarrant
Photographer: Symons, G. Soltau
Medium: Photographic print
Prize-winning photograph in the 'Sea Pieces or River Scenery' category of the 'Amateur Photographer' Monthly Competition No. 36, June 1892
"'On the Tarrant' (G. Soltau Symons, Plympton - Silver Medal). Another very meritorious cattle study which almost suggests one of Cooper's famous cattle pieces. The cattle, standing knee-deep in the water, are very happily grouped. The half-tone in the water is, however, not so well rendered in the reproduction as in the original. A little more foreground would, perhaps, have been an improvement, but possibly circumstances would not permit of the camera being differently placed. The only fault we can find in this photograph is the straight tree trunk on the right, which apparently bisects the picture. A painter would have omitted this, but the task would have been a difficult one for the photographer. Mr. Symons tells us that he used a rapid symmetrical lens working at f/32, and gave an exposure of two seconds."
