Old House, Great Winchester Street
Photographer: Dixon, Henry (1820 - 1892)
Medium: Photographic print
"We have here...the residence of a great merchant of the beginning of the 18th century. Great Winchester Street was full of such houses, as we read in the Stow of 1720: 'Here was a great Messuage called the Spanish Ambassador's House, of late inhabited by Sir James Houblon, Kt., and Alderman of London' - he was Governer of the Bank of England - 'and also other fair houses of Sir John Buckworth and other merchants' (Book II. p. 110)."
