“On the Ant. – The Ant takes its rise in Antingham Ponds some five miles South of Cromer, and flowing South past North Walsham, Dilham, Ruston and Stalham, widens out into Barton Broad, contracts to its normal width at Irstead, and joins the Bure at St. Benet’s Abbey after running its pretty course of from 18 to 20 miles. It may be ascended from the Bure for about eight miles without trouble in small vessels, but when once the locks commence the pleasure diminishes, as they are somewhat numerous, and have to be worked by the boating party themselves as there are no regular attendants.”

Letterpress description by Ernest R. Suffling accompanying Plate LXXIII from ‘Sun Pictures of the Norfolk Broads’.
