In his preface to the book Irish photographer William Despard Hemphill lays claim to "being the first to use Stereoscopic Photographs for the purposes of book illustration." He goes on to describe this image as giving, "..a good general idea of the present state of this once famous city; the Deanery and Gardens (formerly the archiepisopal palace) to the right of the view, with the present Cathedral Spire, Dominican Friary, and other buildings, in the distance."
