English poet William Wordsworth lived at Rydal Mount, about two miles north of Ambleside from 1813 until 1850. His work was greatly inspired by the natural beauty of the local landscape. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) and Robert Southey (1774-1843) also made the Lake District their home at the beginning of the 19th century.
