Prize-winning photograph in the 'Inland Scenery with or without Figures' category of the 'Amateur Photographer' Monthly Competition No. 32, February 1892
"'Stepping Stones' (Mr. J. D. Paterson, Birkenhead). This print, which was awarded the Silver Medal, from a pictorial point of view leaves little to be desired, though it might have been somewhat improved by cutting away a portion of the foreground. The most noticeable defect is a technical one - namely, the presence of marked halation in the foliage, which might have been entirely obviated by backing the plate. This precaution should always be taken when such subjects are attempted. The figure in this picture is well placed, and materially helps the composition. The photograph was taken with Newton's orthopanactinic lens, upon an Ilford ordinary plate, and an exposure of ten seconds given."
