"Sandown is a town of recent years, and since the formation of the Railway, 1862. It has a Local Board, a magnificent bay which it shares with Shanklin, and lovely sands for children, and excellent bathing, enjoyable at any stage of the tide. The Crown Prince and Princess of Germany honoured Sandown with a visit in 1874, and it is very often patronised by the Russian nobility as a watering place."
