In the Artist's Preface of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's novel 'Hyperion' British photographer and publisher of continental views Francis Frith writes of photographing the Tomb of Maximilian: "The Church of the Holy Rood, which contains the celebrated Tomb of Maximilian and the twenty gigantic bronze statues of the house of Hapsburg, was alarmingly dim to our photographic vision. It is lighted, we believe, and that very imperfectly, only on one side; so that we regarded the picture obtained...with some degree of triumphant satisfaction."
