The Royal Institution was designed by Charles Barry and is "a good example of the application of Grecian form to the purposes of a modern erection. Externally the principal feature is the portico, consisting of six columns of the Ionic order, with cornice and pediment occupying the centre of the front towards Mosley-street. The anti on each side are advanced slightly from the main line...and the side-screen of columns gives an additional variety of light and shade...Many literary and scientific societies have from time to time been located within the building, and the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Art still find homes within its walls."
