Prize-winning photograph in the 'Seascape or River Scenery' category of the 'Amateur Photographer' Monthly Competition No. 31, January 1892

"In this competition Mr. Thomas Ballantyne (Glasgow) took the first Silver Medal for No. 1, 'Troubled Waters.' This picture is a striking instance of what may be done with apparatus of a simple and inexpensive character; for Mr. Ballantyne informs us that the lens was a single one, costing but fifteen shillings, the shutter being made by himself. The subject is a comparatively easy one, but Mr. Ballantyne had made the most of it. The horizon is carefully placed, and the picture well proportioned; moreover, the shutter has not been allowed to work so quickly as to destroy the effect of movement."
