"Another character which may be arbitarily noted is the effect upon London of its smoke and cloud. These are not wholly produced by modern industrial conditions. The mists of the Thames estuary, the murkiness of the North Sea fog, were there long before London arose. But between them all the forces which have produced the London sky have made something which all Londoners know, and which no one who has never seen London has ever seen. Among other things it produced the visions of Turner. How many there are who, if they recall their childhood, will chiefly remember the particular tone of London clouds, especially at evening."
Text by Hilaire Belloc from the book 'London'
