The descriptive letterpress accompanying Russell Sedgfield's photograph taken from Richmond Hill quotes from Scottish poet James Thomson's 'Seasons' and Sir Walter Scott's 'Heart of Midlothian.'

"Viewed from a distance the spire of St. Matthias' Church, erected but a few years, has added a new charm to Richmond Hill; and the vast pile of the new Star and Garter Hotel stands out a prominent object. Pembroke Lodge, a residence given to Earl Russell during his life by Her Majesty for his State Services, is also to be readily distinguished from many points, its position being clearly marked by two tall poplar trees."
