William Hemphill tells us, "Kilcommon was much improved by the Earls of Glengall, the late earl having erected a beautiful metal bridge over the Suir, which winds gracefully through the demesne, the drive over this bridge, leading to a charming little sylvan retreat, called 'the Cottage,' built by his predecessor on a gentle eminence, tastefully planted with evergreen shrubs, and situated in a woodland scene of great beauty."
