"Justly does this entrance deserve the title by which it is known, 'The Great West Door.' It is surmounted by a beautiful arch, adorned with tracery work representing the history of Adam and Eve; and on each side of it is a statue representing Robert de Percy holding a piece of wrought timber, and Robert de Vavasour a piece of rough stone, the materials contributed by these noblemen to the building of the Cathedral; while over the top is the figure of Archbishop de Melton in his canonical robes."

Descriptive letterpress from the book 'Photographs of English and Scottish Scenery' by G W Wilson
