The Empire Theatre was one of the leading theatres in London, and employed a large number of dancers, either for the duration of an individual show or for the entire season. The soloists and stars of the show could earn a considerable amount of money, with some receiving up to five guineas a week. Those who were fortunate enough to get into the 'corps de ballet' would have enjoyed regular employment, but their wages would have often been supplemented by other work such as dressmaking.
