This is an interesting advert; it is for a group of monkeys performing at The Duke’s Theatre. They would have been dressed in costumes and would have performed with other animals such as horses and dogs. The Duke’s Theatre was also known as the 'Theatre Royal Holborn' and the 'Holborn Theatre Royal', unfortunately it was destroyed by fire in 1880. It was a small theatre and although a comfortable venue and well ventilated venue, it was badly lit and there were so many complaints that the ceiling had to be lowered. The stage was large in comparison to many in London at the time and this is perhaps why attraction like the Broekman’s Circus could be held there.
