Advert for a Meeting of the South London Harriers
Medium: Print on paper
This leaflet is advertising a meeting of the South London Harriers Athletics Club. This club was founded in 1871 and still in existence today it is one of the 4 oldest athletic clubs in the country. Sport and exercise were very disorganised at the start of the 19th century, games had no rules and there were few clubs or teams. Cricket, football and athletics developed largely through public schools that established rules and regulations for sports and advocated the health benefits of exercise. Spectators were encouraged to support the athletes and for the first time employers encouraged workers to join teams as sports satisfied the aggressive instincts of the workers.
