Charles Stratton was an American working for PT Barnum's touring circus. He was exhibited at circuses as a "tiny Englishman", under the stage name General Tom Thumb. In 1865 Barnum staged a wedding between Stratton and Mercy Lavinia Warren Bump. Billed as the Loving Lilliputians, they were a popular attraction.

Also advertised here is Commodore Nutt, who Barnum had originally encouraged to pursue Lavinia. The rivalry between Nutt and Stratton generated much publicity, particularly when Lavinia was rumoured to have had a child. What became of this child, or whether the whole thing was a hoax, is not known.
