Advert for the Metropolitan Printing Works
Printer: Metropolitan Printing Works

The wholesale production revolution in the 19th-century printing industry was predicated on two developments in particular. In the late 18th century, Nicholas Louis Robert invented a machine that manufactured paper in continuous reels; and in the early 1800s, Aloys Senefelder developed lithography - a printing technique that used the chemical hostility between grease and water to make highly contrasted images.
The growing network of railway lines also allowed faster and cheaper transportation of materials to industry and to market. As the century progressed, business' such as this printing works became hubbubs of activity, printing newspapers, business and greetings cards, leaflets, fliers, and posters.
