During the 19th century, working class men wore coloured cotton shirts without collars, while the upper classes wore starched white linen with detachable collars and cuffs (so as to make washing and starching easier). Male clothing in general became less formal and stiff, influenced by the popularity of 'gentlemanly' sports such as hunting, cricket and cycling.
