This leaflet is advertising Edward's Dessicated Soups. During the 19th century there was widespread poverty and hardship and many social reformers tried to introduce measures to help the needy. Food shortages were common and so soup kitchens were introduced to provide nutritious and wholesome meals for those who could not afford to eat. Many in the working classes had a great dislike of soup preferring to eat food with their fingers, this probably came about because they could not afford to buy cutlery for eating. Many soups, especially those distributed by charities were watery and contained very little goodness. The introduction of soups like Edward’s was to encourage the working classes that soup was healthy and good for them.
