James Spratt initially came from America to London as a lightning-conductor salesman. The sight of homeless and malnourished dogs prowling the London docklands shocked him, and so he established a business in Holborn manufacturing and selling 'cakes' containing wheat, beetroot and other vegetables bound together with beef blood.
