The Church Army movement was set up by the Revered Wilson Carlisle in 1882. A young curate at St Mary Abbott's church in Kensington, Carlisle felt that Christian teachings should be spread to all sections of society, especially those suffering injustice or poverty. The Church Army was therefore an evangelical organisation. It had a bedrock of support from retired or serving members of the armed forces, but numbered many ordinary members of society among its ranks as "workingmen evangelists".
