The first illustrations of working microscopes date from 1625, but it is not known when they were actually invented. Robert Hooke, the great scientific rival of Isaac Newton, is credited as the first Englishman to use a microscope sometime in the late 1600s.

The 19th century was a period of rapid change in medicine and the microscope was a key in identifying germs and how they spread.
