Spectacle lenses in the 1800s were made from glass, and the metal frames common to glasses at the time could be quite expensive. Consequently there are many wills and insurance policies from the period that mention glasses specifically. Only the rich could afford to visit the opticians; the working classes often having to make do with buying glasses from street vendors.
