Other than using newspapers to notify their patients of changes of address, doctors in the 19th century generally did not advertise their services. This leaflet is promoting a doctor's co-operative in South East London.
The 19th century was a period of rapid change in medicine and in scientific technology generally. Despite advances - particularly the introduction of anaesthetics in the 1840s - many people distrusted doctors, preferring to rely on herbal or homemade remedies. A significant proportion of the population could not afford a doctor's services in any case.
