The technological advances of the 19th century made possible the mass manufacture of mechanical goods for industrial or domestic use. Before that, such products were made by hand in homes or in small workshops, comprising what was known as the Domestic Industry. High speed machines were introduced to factories in the 1850s and this meant that hundreds of identical objects like these unions and valves could be produced.
