Throughout the 19th century, bonnets were very fashionable and underwent many changes in size, style and material. Much of the millinery sold, like that beautifully illustrated here, was ready-made. Bonnets and hats could be bought with their trimmings, such feathers, flowers and lace, already added. Alternatively, decorative items could be purchased individually and taken to a milliner who would then create designs to match particular outfits.
