Hats have always been one of the most important and imaginatively suggestive items of clothing: they can be a symbol of status, a fashion statement, or simply a means to keep warm. In Britain, a 'gentlemen' could traditionally be identified by his hat. It was not until the late 17th century, however, that women began wearing hats for fashion rather than function. By the Victorian period, the bonnet was the most fashionable headwear for women while the bowler hat was worn by every self-respecting gentleman.
