Advert for J. & R. Hawley, furniture store
Medium: Print on paper
This is an advertisement for R. J. Hawley's furniture store. In the 19th century for those living in large wealthy households, furniture was the main feature in a room. It was large, grand and often quite bulky. The pieces were intricately designed with large curves and elaborate carvings of animals and fruits. A Victorian house would look very cluttered to our eyes today as rooms were jam packed with as many pieces of furniture as was possible and every surface was covered in ornaments and decorations. Furniture was expensive and was purchased to last for a lifetime and even to pass down through the generations.
