This is an advertisement for Germon's Banjo tuition. Across America and Europe during the late 19th century there was a craze for playing the banjo. It had traditionally been seen as an instrument played by African slaves and it was frowned upon if one played or listened to such music. With the growth in popularity of the Minstrel groups the banjo became more respectable. Both composers and performers sought to transform the banjo and thousands of pieces of music were written to encourage the middle classes to learn to play.
