Advert for C Hayman, ladie's clothing store
Medium: Print on paper
This is an advertisement for C. Hayman's clothing store. The basic shape of women’s clothing during the 19th century was to have a fitted bodice with a long full skirt but as the century progressed there were changes in style, shape, material and trimmings. Fashions changed quickly at this time because for the first time clothing was affordable and there was enough money to buy clothes to suit the different seasons. We can date this advertisement to the 1880s because the dresses featured are long and flat at the front and have large high bustles at the back but the skirt is long and narrow from the front.
